Sher Ali Afridi

Sher Ali Afridi also called Shere Ali, was the murderer of Lord Mayo, Viceroy of India on 8 February 1872. He was a prisoner at Andaman and Nicobar Islands at the time.
==Early life==
Sher Ali worked for the British administration in the Punjab Mounted Police during the 1860s.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.andaman.org/BOOK/app-o/texto.htm )〕 He came from the Tirah valley in Khyber Agency (now a Federally Administered Tribal Area) and worked for the Commissioner of Peshawar.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.khyber.org/people/sarfaroshan/SherAliAfridi.shtml )〕 He served the British in Ambala in a cavalry regiment〔 He served in the Indian army in Rohilkhand and Oudh during the 1857 Rebellion (Sepoy mutiny, that is, the Indian Soldiers serving the East India Company). He worked under Major Hugh James as a cavalry trooper in Peshawar and as a mounted orderly for Reynell Taylor, who awarded Sher Ali with a horse, pistol and certificate.〔 Due to his good character, Sher Ali was popular among Europeans and was taking care of Taylor's children.〔 In a family feud, he killed one of his relatives named Hydur〔 at Peshawar in broad daylight and although he pleaded innocence, he was sentenced to death on 2 April 1867. On appeal, his conviction was reduced by a judge, Colonel Pollock,〔 to life imprisonment〔 and he was deported to ''Kala Pani'' or Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to serve his sentence.〔 Since his arrival, he was acknowledged to have behaved well since 1871, and so was permitted to work as a barber at Port Blair.〔
